Interesting things that wind up in the e-mail.

One of my Gentle Readers sent me this link in an e-mail, saying that I would probably appreciate this song.

I watched it, and then listened to it without watching the video. It’s more complex than I would have imagined, and very allegorical.

The title — “Winterborn” — intrigued me, and I don’t ever recall coming across a reference to “Winterborn” before, so I started drifting about the ‘Net to sate my curiosity.

On the message board for the band, one poster related that this song was inspired by an American military helicopter pilot in Afghanistan who was shot down and killed while trying to rescue civilians.

I have no way to verify this, but I like it.

I’ve never heard of this group before, and I’ve not yet listened to any of their other songs, but this song and the story behind it makes me hope they achieve their dreams.

During my research, I also discovered that author John Ringo has adopted this song as the theme for his “Ghost” series of books — here’s hoping the extra exposure brings good things to the band.

  1. You should try listening to some other Cruxshadows songs… the new track ‘Sophia’ comes to mind.

  2. I’ve never much cared for the german inspired electronica aspect of the band, but I love their lyrics.

Oh, and you REALLY need to check out DragonForce.

  3. If you read the Ghost series, be ready for some extreme sexual situations. But, it is extremely good action series.

  4. Seeing as you liked the “Sten” series.
You should check out the “Prince Roger” series by Ringo/Weber and also..
The Polsleen war series by Ringo/several others..
Good stuff, and not as “whimsical”..(is that REALLY the right word?!?!) as the Ghost books.
The “Council War: series is also good.
If you haven’t also tried a read or two of this guy…
    Eric Flint. Try “1632”.
Upon you peace, and all those of your house.

  5. You would probably enjoy most of their latest album, “Dreamcypher”, which has “Sophia”, which draven mentioned, and also “Defender” and “Eye of the Storm” that deal with similar themes.

  6. I don’t know for sure, but it’s plausible, I know she was a fan of the band.

One of her friends is currently in Walter Reed, the victim of ‘friendly fire’.

  7. From what I remember, the album Winterborn is from is about the Fall of Troy. That gave me alot of context to lyrics I already loved.

As to Ringo, you should check out his books and rants if you haven’t already.

Ghost is good… very good, and he seems to be turning them out a novel a minute, but with no ill effects to quality. But I do have reinforce that warning about extreme sexual situations… We’re not talking about HBO definition of that rating either.

  8. Dawg, that Ringo fellow makes the “vampire seduction” novels that seem to be so popular as of late seem to be sorta… tamely G-rated… I dunno if his books are actually _legal_ in Texas…

  9. Found this on Myspace, after reading it a couple times it does seem that it could be as stated. Fitting memorium to those lost in this bloody war, not just to the pilots shot down (I personally know some of the Army chopper crews shot down over in Afghanistan and Iraq) but to all the men and women who have bleed and are bleeding over there.

    Lyrics for “Winterborn This Sacrifice”

Dry your eyes and quietly bear this pain with pride
For heaven shall remember the silent and the brave
And promise me, they will never see, the fear within our eyes
We will give strength to those who still remain

So bury fear for fate draws near and hide the signs of pain
With noble acts, the bravest souls endure the heart’s remains
Discard regret, that in this debt a better world is made
That children of a newer day might remember, and avoid our fate.

And in the fury of this darkest hour we will be your light
You’ve asked me for my sacrifice and I am Winter born
Without denying, a faith is come that I have never known
I hear the angels call my name and I am Winter born

Hold your head up high-for there is no greater love
Think of the faces of the people you defend
And promise me, they will never see the tears within our eyes
Although we are men with mortal sins, angels never cry

So bury fear for fate draws near and hide the signs of pain
With noble acts, the bravest souls endure the heart’s remains
Discard regret, that in this debt a better world is made
That children of a newer day might remember, and avoid our fate.

And in the fury of this darkest hour we will be your light
You’ve asked me for my sacrifice and I am Winter born
Without denying, a faith in God that I have never known
I hear the angels call my name and I am Winter born

And in the fury of this darkest hour
    I will be your light
    A lifetime for this destiny
    For I am Winter born
    And in this moment…
I will not run, it is my place to stand
    We few shall carry hope
    Within our bloodied hands

    And in our Dying
We’re more alive-than we have ever been
I’ve lived for these few seconds
    For I am Winter born

And in the fury of this darkest hour
    We will be the light
You’ve asked me for my sacrifice
    And I am Winter born
Without denying, a faith in man
    That I have never known
I hear the angels call my name
    And I am Winter born

    Within this moment now
I am for you, though better men have failed
I will give my life for love
    For I am Winter born

And in my dying I’m more alive, than I have ever been
I will make this sacrifice for I am Winter born
