Petition

I have been told that on-line petitions are worthless. They can be spoofed easily, verification is iffy, and politicians aren’t going to base their decisions on what may be a manipulated Internet document.

Be that as it may, signing one of these petitions doesn’t cost you a thing, takes thirty seconds — and Goddess knows that the Internet is affecting more and more things these days.

Ian McCarthy over at TexasOpenCarry.com/Txcdl.org has an on-line petition up to encourage the Texas State Legislature to allow the open carry of pistols in Texas.

I’d take it kindly if my Texas readers could wander by and sign it.

Thanks, y’all.

  1. Yes, I signed this petition back on Jun 23.  Although, if given the choice I’ll still carry concealed, but the important part here is that Texas gives us the ‘Choice’.  Thanks LawDog, for drawing attention to this issue.

  2. Here’s hoping it works! I’ll be coming back in a couple of years, and I hope the rights will still be there.

  3. On-line petitions are worthless. They can be spoofed easily, verification is iffy, and politicans (spelling) aren’t going to base their decisions on what may be a manipulated Internet document.

  4. It doesn’t hurt to sign the online petition. But, also send a letter, a fax, and/or give a call to your state senator and representative. They will pay much more attention to this than they will an online petition.

  5. Seems to me Dog already said that, anonymous. If we want to sign it, why is it any skin off your nose?

  6. Anonymous is pointing out a spelling error of mine. It’s been fixed.

  7. My comment with my signature #18687:
“‘Open carry’ is the epitome of ‘bear’, as in ‘keep and bear’, as in ‘Shall not be infringed’. Make Texas law conform to the Second Amendment.”

  8. Did it back in June. I’m very happy to see that it’s catching like wildfire, though.

It seems that open carry in TX is gathering a pretty good head of steam. I’m happy about that, too. Maybe it’ll get rid of the requirement to be TOTALLY concealed (specifically, printing = not concealed).

I had a conversation about this with a lady in my office a couple weeks ago. She’s from Ohio. She says she wouldn’t want TX to be an o.c. state, citing wackos having road rage issues. I told her that if that were going to happen, it’d have happened already since you can carry in your car in TX w/o a license. While she gave me the tilted-head dog expression, I then mentioned that TX is one of few states that don’t have open-carry provisions. She said that you couldn’t o.c. in Ohio. I told her that she was wrong, and that Ohio is one of the more common o.c. states. She said, “Well, I never noticed anyone walking around in Ohio with a gun on their hip,” to which I replied: “That’s the point.”

  9. Lawdog, I want to suggest the book “Cryptonomicon” to you.

There’s a part where a hacker group has a habit of openly carrying firearms, since [according to the book,] state laws tend to concern themselves about conceal carry.

    Good book.

Also had one of the more interesting ideas about preventing genocide — don’t try to educate/stop the genociders, arm those who are being killed.

  10. Signed! This should *deter* the wannabe bangers & critters IF Austin signs off on it. Keep putting the pressure on’em people!

  11. It’s odd. I always think of TX as somewhat of an anti-gun state because they don’t allow open carry.

We’ve never had an issue with open carry in Arizona, and as Streetsweeper noted, it is an effective deterrent. I mean, if someone is going to attack an openly armed individual, you KNOW he needs shooting.

Also, I’ve noticed that panhandlers are very polite when asking for change from someone with a 1911 on their hip.

  12. “Also had one of the more interesting ideas about preventing genocide — don’t try to educate/stop the genociders, arm those who are being killed.”

I’ve long thought that we should have loaded up a few cargo planes with captured AK-47s from Iraq, with 100-200 rounds of ammo taped to each gun, and airdropped lots of gift-wrapped packages to Darfur. Would’ve ended the genocide right quick.

  13. “4. It is well known that the requirement to conceal a handgun for the purpose of protecting self, friends, and family can be difficult especially in Texas with our extreme heat since a person will usually have to wear a jacket to properly conceal a handgun and to avoid “printing.” “

I bought a 642 (with laser) for about $500 just to be able to carry in the hot weather (i.e. the about 9 months of the year when I’d like to avoid wearing a suit jacket or long coat). I know that my .45 is more accurate and more effective – as well as being a better deterrent – but I can’t use it anywhere near as much as I’d like to without OC. We NEED a change in the law.

“7. Ten states including … all allow open carry of handguns without a license. Twelve states including … New Jersey…allow open carry of handguns with a license.”

Your odds of getting ANY kind of carry license in NJ will improve significantly upon the verified sighting of a huge flock of flying pigs that blot out the noonday sun. Used to be from the PRNJ, and its only gotten worse since I escaped under the wire.
