By way of Peter over at Bayou Renaissance Man, we learn of a further adaptation of JRR Tolkiens work.

A lady in England, Kate Madison, has managed to film a story taken from — literally — two paragraphs in the first appendix of The Lord of the Rings, concerning the parents of Aragorn.

For being done on what Hollywood would consider to be an impossibly small budget, the film looks absolutely astonishing — and it’s been released on the Internet.

Born of Hope.

Bravo, Ms. Madison. Well done, indeed.

  1. I watched the first 24 minutes of it last night, but had to stop as I REALLY needed to sleep. It was very, very well done.

  2. Agreed! VERY well done (matter of fact, better than a lot of 'real' movies)!

  3. Looking forward to seeing it, when I can.

And when, oh WHEN, will someone do a good film adaptation of the Scouring Of The Shire from the third volume of the trilogy?

There's an entire movie– a good one– in there. It has its action, its drama, its internal conflict (remember that Frodo fought to keep those of the opposition who surrendured from being killed), its climax (the Battle of Bywater), and satisfying end (when Saruman and Wormtongue die).

  4. I had no idea there was an entire genre of Tolkien films. I'm downloading this 72 minute film. Wow is right!

BTW, LD, is there an email to which I can send you stuff?

  5. When I was but a callow yoot, I discovered "The Hobbit" I then found and read "The Trilogy of the Rings" and "The Silmarillion". The one thing I remember from the lot of them is that they were stultifyingly tedious and those hours spent reading them were hours I'd never get back. Why I continued until I'd read the whole thing, I'll never be able to explain.

  6. Greetings,

  7. Sorry for the off topic post.

FYI – CTCop blog seems to be down or off the web. Link broken.

  8. Finally, something I'm really looking forward to watching. Thanks for the heads up. – B.

  9. MattG,

You're a man after my own heart! The Scouring of the Shire is arguably the best part of the whole trilogy!

  10. Lovely!

How I wish I could visit the world of Middle-Earth!

  11. Is there another download site for the "Born of Hope" movie? I kept having it fail to play and yesterday it said it was taken down due to a dispute with Konami (aren't they a game company?).

  12. Wow… that is without a doubt the best fan film I've ever seen…. as OldNFO said, easily better than tons of "real" films.

Of course, there's lots of good material to mine there.

    LOVE Elladan and Elohir! 🙂

To the "stultifying" Silmarillion – it's much like the old heroic poetry, or even Shakespeare plays in this – it can be agonizing on the page to modern eyes, but hearing it spoken is a whole other experience.

There's an audiobook version out there that I can't recommend highly enough. One warning though… listen to it enough hours straight and you'll find yourself thinking – and speaking – in high heroic language. All kinds of entertaining, but it makes ordering lunch a wee bit tricky.
