SQUEE!

Your Humble Scribe has learned that Paramount will be releasing a D&D movie set in the Forgotten Realms in March of 2023.

I watched the trailer, and words cannot express how giddy teenage LawDog is right now.

The trailer has a displacer beast, a gelatinous cube (a/k/a Dungeon Roomba), an actual black dragon, the Red Wizards of Thay, Waterdeep, and an owlbear.

Aw, man, this is going to ROCK.

And yes, I know that technically a druid can’t change into an owlbear. I don’t care. Yes, I know it’s against the core rules, but if you’re making that argument you DM’d a boring campaign, or never heard of House Rules.

I can’t wait.

EDIT: I just realized that Chris Pine’s character is wearing a Harper pin!

  1. They hit all the checkboxes for sure for the Forgotten Realms D&D fan. I even saw a mimic in there. ๐Ÿ™‚ I agree with you, Lawdog, on the potential for this movie. The Led Zeppelin song during the preview also set the tone for the story: light action with humor. Hope to hear your impression of the movie once itโ€™s out.

  2. On one hand, the visuals are quite good and are definitely hitting high marks (the black dragon strafing infantry with its acid breath was excellent).

On the other hand: Hollywood. Nuff said.

  3. And now I must repeat the mantra required whenever Hollywood touches something beloved from my youth:

Please don’t suck. Please don’t suck. Please don’t suck.

Please don’t suck. Please don’t suck. Please don’t suck.

Please don’t suck. Please don’t suck. Please don’t suck.

  4. One does hope that they’ll figure out the main rule of a good film adaptation: Don’t Hate The Source Material.

One of the many, numerous, and obvious problems Hollywood has is they often obviously hate the property they’re working on. They find it embarrassing, so they need to chef it up with Wokeness to be one of teh kewl kids. They have to mock the story, yadda yadda yadda.
    It’s rather annoying.

    1. The only warning signs I’m seeing is that the main character is a male who acts like an idiot and the Stronk Independent WAMENZ fighter.

But I shall remain hopeful that this will not suck.

  5. GOT, Wheel of Time, Rings of Power…

Hollywood could fuck up a wet dream.

I aint holding my breath, though I desperately hope it’s good.

  6. Sigh – after your first two paragraphs, I could read and understand the individual words, but haven’t a clue what it all means. Dungeons and Dragons was definitely not a part of my youth. I’ll give this a try when I get a chance to watch it.
