Amusing myself with AI art.

Out of a spirit of curiosity I started dinking around with an on-line AI art creator called NightCafe.

My first effort was a Fox Knight:

Not sure why the AI decided it needed a villain in the pic, but machts nicht. And what’s with the extra tail hiding behind the rock?

So, next I decided to try generating a Lady Fox. It took some major tweaking — the AI kept wanting to fill the edges of the pic with little foxes, but I finally got this one. I call it “Rita Fox”:

Flushed with success, I tried making an image with both. Ye gods and little fishies — NightCafe seems to have a fondness for threesomes — but I finally got these two pics:

There are minor issues:  the first one looks a bit like she’s wearing a fox-fur stole, and her tail is … odd. In the second her left ear is a bit wonky, but all-in-all I’m rather pleased.

Then I started trying to add weapons, because my fox couple is civilised. Oh, my dear and fluffy lord — I think I gave the NightCafe AI an electronic aneurysm.

I won’t post the pics here — yes, they’re that bad — but I started with firearms and that was a No Go. Don’t get me wrong — I saw the book covers in the 1980s, 90s, and 00s, and I saw the toy guns of the same time frame. Weird-looking weapons that make no functional sense (If the magazine is here, and the chamber is there … how the hell does the round get from here to there???) don’t faze me.

But what NightCafe gave me was just … all bolloxed up.

So I switched to knives and swords. Ugh, that wasn’t any better. My poor fox couple had stabbed themselves, were carrying an absurd number of stabbies, or — how do I put this delicately … their sword blades maybe needed pharmaceutical help.

By that time I had run out of credits (I’m cheap, I’m not paying an AI to amuse me), so I’m going to ponder on the prompts and try again in a couple of days.

The little me that always wanted to be an artist is, quite frankly, thrilled.

Sigh.

  1. You might be able to up fidelity if you get specific on the weapon requests i.e. ask for claymores, arming swords, or shamshirs, etc more specifically?

  2. I occasionally get bored and try to find out what prompts Are Not Allowed in AI generators. My favorite no-no was looking for a picture of a bucket being filled from two spigots at once (needed it for work). Apparently, the AI I was using thinks buckets are The Devil, and would not generate anything. Very sad. I ended up using clip art and scissors instead.

  3. Darn it, sir. Between your images and a song from Sonata Arctica, I now have a story that demands to get written. Lord Ferox Vulpin’s story was NOT on my to-do list.

  4. I’ve been trying to get Midjourney to cough up a decent halberd for three engine updates now.
